Copying DB2 Data from
Production to Test Systems
Countless
corporations maintain large amounts of data in DB2 databases. It is
normal to find several DB2 subsystems for production, test and
development. Providing relevant test data requires you to copy from
one DB2 subsystem to another which means the object-id translation is
necessary as we may presume that the target objects cannot be
dropped. Use of DSN1COPY is slow and cumbersome when you need
parallel runs to increase elapsed time and synchronous checks for
compatibility between source and target.
This
is where BCV5 delivers. The user simply selects the relevant DB2
subsystems and the databases and/or tables to be copied and BCV5
takes cares of everything else: generates/compares DDL; copies data
in multi-thread mode; translates object ids when necessary; copies indexes and rebuilds those automatically which are not defined in the source system; copies related runstats, views, grants, binds and procedures. The user may
decide to use tablespaces or image copies as input. A flexible
renaming function allows one to change attributes and names.
Efficient
and manageable copying of DB2 data is more than simply copying
datasets. BCV5 handles the entire complex process, and even more
importantly, saves greatly on resources. Users see savings of up to
90% in CPU time when compared to standard unload/load based
procedures. Also the elapsed copy time can be reduced by up to 90%
against both unload/load and DSN1COPY. This is achieved with BCV5
using a unique multi-processing copy function. BCV5 also saves in
preparation time as it’s so
easy to use.
What
if an organisation running a 24x7 environment cannot afford to
stop/impact the mission critical systems?
BCV6 copies DB2 systems
without interruption. It is just as fast and efficient as BCV5 and
ensures full integrity is maintained on the copied systems. No other
product on the market can deliver this capability today - i.e. high
speed copying of uninterrupted source DB2 systems with guaranteed
integrity. For more information please refer to: bcv6

BCV5 provides fast, efficient and manageable copying of DB2 data. It automatically generates and executes jobs to:
-
extract object definitions from the DB2 catalog of the source system,
-
transfer the definitions to the target system, rename the objects as specified, and apply them at the target DB2 system (CREATE, or DROP and CREATE) or,
-
compare the source definitions with existing target objects for compatibility,
-
copy all applicable page sets from source to target DB2 system,
-
translate object-ids, if requested / detected to be necessary,
-
adapt RBA or LRSN,
-
apply log data to the copied tablespaces (BCV6 only).
The product provides two user interfaces with identical functions. One based on ISPF, the other is a workstation program written in JAVA.
To define a copy task a user selects the involved DB2 subsystems, source and target, which are identical if it is copy within a single subsystem, and
-
the objects, i. e. the databases or tables to be copied,
-
the renaming rules to be applied for the objects to be copied,
-
whether the task shall recreate the indexes at the target side,
-
whether the internal OBJECT IDs (OBIDS) should be translated,
-
whether the related RUNSTATS data should also be transferred to the catalog of the target system,
-
whether other related objects like GRANTS, BINDS, VIEWS, .. should also be transferred,
-
whether the source objects will be stopped during the copy process or
-
With BCV6, whether the 'in-flight' copies shall be adjusted to ensure integrity of the target, utilizing the log of the source DB2 system.
Once a task is defined it may be executed at any time under the control of the product itself, or under control of a scheduler, or manually stage by stage.
